Part 2 of 3: Working in Advanced Settings Mode

Sharing vs. Embedding (Basic Mode)

The lower section of the New Job Jacket dialog box includes a Share This Jacket check box, which is selected but unavailable. When you create a new job jacket using the Job Jackets Manager, it is automatically a "shared" jacket.

Note: In Basic Settings mode, the Job Jackets Manager
shows the Sharing status of existing job jackets.

An embedded layout is part of the master layout while a linked layout is an external file. The same concept applies to a job jacket — it can be either embedded in a specific project file or shared as an external XML file.

When you create a new job jacket from within the Jackets Manager, it is shared by default. Because it isn't yet linked to a specific project, there's nothing to embed it in so it can only be shared. (We'll show you how to change this later in this article.)

The Save In menu defines the location where the job-jacket XML file will be saved. Job-jacket files are saved in the default jacket folder defined in the Job Jackets pane of the Preferences dialog box. You can also choose Other, then navigate to a specific location where you want to save the shared job-jacket file.

Sharing an Embedded Jacket. If you are editing a job jacket that was generated when you created a project file, the Share This Jacket check box will be available but unchecked. You can change an existing job jacket from Embedded to Shared by checking the Share This Jacket check box.

When a job jacket is generated by creating a new project, that job jacket is already related to a specific project. So, a third option — Project Folder — might become available in the Save In menu. Choosing this option saves the job-jacket XML file in the same folder where the project file is saved.

We say "might" because there are instances when a project file does not exist in a folder:

  • A project saved on your desktop is not considered to be in a folder.

  • If you have not yet saved a project file, it doesn't exist in a folder.

In these two cases, the Project Folder option is not available in the Save In menu.

Job Ticket Templates

When you create a new job jacket, it automatically includes a Default Job Ticket, which is the ticket template from which active job tickets will be created. You can edit the Default Job Ticket by selecting it and clicking the Edit button.

When editing a job ticket template in Basic Settings mode, you can define style settings (assets) and layouts.

Like a job jacket, style settings can be imported from the application or from an existing project. When defining a job-ticket template, a third option — Current Job Jacket — lets you embed assets in the ticket template that you've already added to the job jacket.

Note: When you create a project from or attach a project to a ticket template, the project is actually linked to a copy of the ticket template, which is simply a job ticket (not a ticket template).

When defining a Layout, you can name the layout and define the medium type; call layout specs, which you defined in the job jacket; and call output specifications or rule sets that were created in Advanced Settings mode (you can't create those types of resources in Basic Settings mode).

Note: You can also add new ticket templates to a job jacket by clicking the New Ticket Template button in the New/Edit Job Jacket dialog box.
