Once you have generated a table of contents, you process it in the same way as you would an index. Import it into your document and style to your liking.

Figure 18 Here is a sample table of contents. It is very simple, but adequately shows the format of a typical TOC. The first level is of the chapter headings, and the indented text is that of section heads within a chapter. In this particular document, the chapter headings were also used as the running heads along the top of each page.

With SonarTOC installed in the QuarkXPress XTensions folder, the Sonar menu is expanded as shown here. The additional features enable you to employ style sheets to create word/phrase lists for use in Sonar Bookends Professional.

NOTE: If you install both the included XTensions module and SonarTOC, you will have duplicate Sonar menus in QuarkXPress. If you have purchased SonarTOC, install only that version.

Web site index tools

Indexing a web site is as easy as making a document index. Start with a word/phrase list and then choose web > create web site index.... Keep in mind that you will be indexing a set of web files that are on your hard drive and that the files you are indexing must be unlocked. This is especially important if you are using Dreamweaver's check in/check out feature that locks files when they are checked in.

Figure 20 Start with a word/phrase list and then create the site index using the web menu of Sonar Bookends Professional.

After you have chosen the site root, Sonar Bookends Professional will begin processing the documents within that root. A dialogue box will help you to track the progress. I found this particularly useful because I have a large site with many thousands of files and it was comforting to see that the process was still running.

Figure 21 A progress dialogue box ensures that the process has not stalled.

I processed a site index for X-Ray Magazine online by creating a word/phrase list of product names. Most of the stories we print here are about extensions technology, so a list of product names was a great starting point. From there, I manually added other words and phrases that were relevant, such as publishing, imposition, and the like.

Figure 22 Here's a bit of my resulting site index. The page numerals are not page numbers, but rather the occurrence number. All web pages are technically a single page.
