Merge Layouts with Append

If you do like the idea of layouts within a project, you still may not be using them because of the difficulty in merging existing files. Well, that’s all over. All you need to do in QuarkXPress 7 is open the project you want to add a layout to and choose file > append. Select the project file containing the layout and click open. In the append dialogue box (figure 2), click layouts in the list at left. Click the layouts you want to append and then click the right-facing arrow to bring them on over. Click ok and then resolve any conflicts with style sheets, colors, H&Js, and so on, as usual (another advantage to using append!).

Fly, Be Free with Export

Again, even if you like layouts within projects, you might occasionally need to extract a layout from its relatives and let it live an independent existence. For one thing, project files containing multiple layouts can easily balloon in size, making it difficult to share files with other users. To extract a layout, choose file > export > layouts as project. This little tongue-twister is to be taken literally: export layouts (plural) as project (singular). So you can export as many layouts as you want from the current project into one separate project. Simply check select all or the layouts you want to export in the export layouts as project dialogue box (figure 3) and give the project file a name in the save as field.

Tip: This is also how you down-save files from QuarkXPress 7 to 6 — choose file > export >layouts as project > version > 6.0 (drop-down menu). Note that collect for output also extracts the current layout from the active project into a new project.
